people's needs vs skills
Year of the linux desktop? :)
The best examples of open source are Mozilla, which is a corporation owned by a non-profit and Ubuntu, which is basically a millionaire launching it as his dream.
Pure-corporate or one-man shows either have serious ethical problems or do not scale to the scale needed to have bigger impacts.
Culturally open source is...missing the bigger picture which is ethics. See also how unethical corps learned how to be OSS and keep being unethical.
people's needs vs skills
Asking people what they feel or need is the basic idea that democracy rests on (and also the reason why expert dictatorships never worked or would work).
Asking people how to act upon feelings and needs is an absolute fucking disaster. Instead asking people to select the smartest people in a room who'll implement something is what works. (representative democracy, science).
Gut punch: F/OSS is largely random people implementing things randomly and that doesn't work well
health and safety, noise
Does anyone know how much of the time it's safe to wear earplugs for? And which kinds are best / how to clean them, for frequent and long term use?
I know some construction jobs require them so I expect the varieties used there are probably fine but I'd really like to know the bounds on this.
Kid sings constantly, partner has insomnia reduced by background sound, and I can't think or sleep over it. So I use earplugs a _lot_ and I want to do it safely.
The number of history majors are decreasing lately at western universities.
Perhaps these days there is just no need for people who study the past, with the great advances in record keeping and recording mediums. Perhaps that “humanities” stuff is a bit overrated.
Historians of course, know otherwise.
Critical thinking, looking at long running societal structures and trends, source analysis, context are things that are always needed. Historians know this from...history.
